Means of Disposing of the Quran: An Analytical Study of the Quran, Sunnah, and the Four Schools of Thought

Abstract

The proper disposal of worn-out Quranic manuscripts and pages is a topic of significant importance within Islamic tradition. This study aims to explore the various methods of disposing of such sacred texts, drawing from the Quran, Sunnah, and the teachings of the four major Islamic schools of thought. The research investigates five primary methods: burning, burying, submerging in water, disposing of old CDs containing Quranic translations and interpretations, and recycling. Burning worn-out Quranic texts is a method rooted in historical practice, considered by many scholars to ensure the respectful treatment of sacred materials. Burying these texts in the ground is another traditional method, symbolizing a return to the earth and preserving the sanctity of the Quran. Submerging Quranic texts in water is also explored, particularly in contexts where other methods may not be feasible. The study also examines modern issues such as the disposal of old CDs containing Quranic translations and interpretations. With advancements in technology, proper methods for disposing of digital formats are discussed. Recycling Quranic manuscripts or pages is a more contemporary approach, balancing respect for the sacred texts with environmental considerations. By analyzing the perspectives from the Quran, Hadith, and the jurisprudential opinions of the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools of thought, the study provides a comprehensive understanding of the recommended practices for disposing of worn-out Quranic materials. It underscores the importance of maintaining the sanctity and respect for the Quran through appropriate disposal methods.
