The Family of Prophet Yaʿqūb (Jacob) in the Light of the Quran, the Bible, and the Talmud
Keywords:
Prophet Yaʿqūb, Wives, Bible, Quran, TalmudAbstract
This study examines the family of Prophet Yaʿqūb (Jacob) by comparing accounts from the Quran, the Bible, and the Talmud. The first part focuses on Yaʿqūb’s wives: Leah, Rachel, and their maidservants. In the Bible, only the marriage details are mentioned, lacking early life or birth details. The Bible's focus is spiritual guidance rather than historical details. Leah was married to Yaʿqūb through deception by her father, Laban, before he married Rachel, the one he loved, after serving Laban for another seven years. The Quran highlights the significance of the Children of Israel and urges them to fulfill their covenant with God, emphasizing divine blessings and the importance of remembrance and adherence to faith. The Talmudic accounts provide further details, especially regarding Joseph's (Yaʿqūb’s son) experiences in Egypt. The Talmud describes Joseph's dreams, his brothers’ jealousy, and his rise to power in Egypt. The differences and similarities among these texts are explored to provide a comprehensive understanding of Yaʿqūb's family.
