The Origin, Evolution, and Development of Arabic Exegetical Literature in the Indian Subcontinent: An Overview of Selected Exegeses

Abstract

 This research paper provides a comprehensive overview of the origin, evolution, and development of Arabic exegetical literature in the Indian subcontinent. The initial spread of Islamic teachings in the region was significantly influenced by Arab traders and Muslim conquerors, laying the foundation for the early Islamic influence in the subcontinent. The study traces the beginnings of Qur'anic exegesis back to the second century Hijri, highlighting the need to present Islamic teachings in local languages. By the late third century Hijri, the first translation of the Qur'an into Hindi was introduced. The research examines notable early exegeses such as "Kashif al-Haqaiq wa Qamus al-Daqaiq," "Gharaib al-Qur'an wa Ragaib ul-Furqan," and "Jawahir al-Qur'an," which represent significant exegetical efforts of their time. Additionally, works like "Tafsir Tatar Khani" and "Sawati’ al-Ilham" are introduced, alongside discussions on mystical, theological, and legal exegeses. The paper also explores commentaries that emphasize the principles of Nazm-e- Qur’ān (Qur'anic coherence) and Tafsir ul- Qur’ān bi al- Qur’ān (exegesis through the Qur’ān itself). Through this exploration, the research highlights the richness of the exegetical tradition in the Indian subcontinent, reflecting its intellectual and religious legacy. Overall, this study offers valuable insights into the historical development of exegetical literature in the region, demonstrating how it has shaped and enriched the understanding of the Qur’ān among scholars and the Muslim community in the Indian subcontinent.
