Abstract

Before Islam, it was common practice to have many wives at a time without any limitations. This polygamy system had a lot of social evils hidden in it. Islam introduced a well balanced polygamy family system with some limitations and conditions. Holy Prophet practiced it and his companions also acted upon this family system.Unfortunately this family system is not adopted and practiced in our society. Before British rule in subcontinent indo pak, there was a magnificent difference between Muslim community and non muslim community in regard of having one or more wives at a time. But after 90 years British rule, this difference is wiped out and Muslims stopped marrying second and third wives, which resulted in many social evils in society. Now a days, in our society, having two or more wives is not accepted but unfortunately, having many girl friends or committing adultery is acceptable act in some ways. Remarrying, even marrying first time is difficult and having girlfriends and committing adultery is easy. We have to change this system to ensure acting upon the true spirit of Islam. Accepting and adopting Islamic polygamy family system will ensure increase the number of members of ummat e Muhammadi, as Muhammad s.a.w.s will feel proud on the large quantity of his ummat at the judgment day. It will secure more female of the society from any kind of harassment by keeping more of them into nikah. Generally, all over the world, number of female is greater than the number of male, Islamic polygamy system will ensure the balance among male
and female. So, it is need of hour to make conspicuous the importance of Islamic polygamy system in our society.
