Abstract

A question is a sentence or statement that seeks clarification or more specific information. In Ḥadīth studies, it involves a student asking their sheik about the narrators of Ḥadīth or any defects in the text. When Muhaddithīn faced difficulties in understanding the meaning of a Ḥadīth, its narrators, criticisms, validations, or text defects, they would consult their teachers for complete information. This tradition of questioning is ancient. During the prophetic era, the Companions (Ṣaḥāba)  used to seek help from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to understand the Qur'an or solving issues arising in various aspects of life. After the Prophet (peace be upon him), if any companion faced an issue, they would ask other Companions (Ṣaḥāba( or Prophet's wives. They were very careful in accepting Ḥadīth narratives and would inquire from others when a Ḥadīth was narrated in front of them them, they would inquire about it from other companions . This tradition continued among the Tabi'in & Tabe Tabi'in, becoming an established practice. By the era of the Tabi'in, this practice (of questioning) had formally developed into an art. Muhaddithīn mentioned questions and their answers related to Hadith in their books. The nature of these questions could vary, such as questions related to the names of narrators, defects in the Hadith, the authenticity of the Hadith, historical questions, questions about any jurisprudential issue present in the Hadith, etc. As Abu Isa Muhammad bin Isa Tirmidhi, a well-known scholar of the 2nd century Hijri recorded the responses of his teachers in his compilation "Sunan Tirmidhi". Hence, in this article, the questions in the Sunan Tirmidhi will be examined along with the views of other scholars regarding them.
